I gave up on my usual rule of only buying Warhammer 40K omnibuses and started in on the Horus Heresy series.

Dan Abnett's "Gaunt's Ghosts" series follows the Tanith First and Only on the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, a massive strike by the Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy to free the Sabbat Worlds from the tyranny of a Chaos attack.  Double Eagle also takes place during this crusade (and an off-hand comment by one character makes one think that the character ( Read more... )

I've got a new favorite Warhammer 40K omnibus.  It completely blew the others out of the water.

So, in a way, I'm glad that I didn't read it first.  It does mean the one I'm reading now is suffering in comparison, but oh well.

The Founding by Dan Abnett follows Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his Imperial Guard regiment, the Tanith First and Only.

If you pay attention to such things, you might note that this is the first Warhammer 40,000 related entry that's not labeled "military sci-fi" in the tags.

That's because it's, well, NOT.

If anything, it's an interstellar mystery, mixed with a bit of the "epic quest".  After all, a battle with a Chaos Battle Titan isn't even the climax of that book!
